If You care about your career, You Need To Be Managed!
If you look at careers like Beyonce’s, you’ll know that her Father, Matthew Knowles, had an IMMENSE role in her successful career. He groomed Destiny’s Child to stardom, and when Beyonce transitioned to her solo act, he played a very active role in the beginning. Following Sasha Fierce, she made the decision to be self- managed. This is no easy task, especially for someone who has amassed a high profile career. Nonetheless, everything from the type of record deal you land, to the people you include on tour are carefully thought out with the help of an artist manager. Every decision counts – so whether you like it or not, you need a manager.
Dear aspiring artists, your manager should be the one person that is most heavily involved in the well -being of career, aside from yourself. To quote Sister Act Two, ”If you want to be somebody, if you want to go somewhere, you better wake up and pay attention.” Your manager isn’t there to stifle your creativity and drive, but to look over the logistics and ensure you’re not killing you career before it starts.
If you are one of many who are currently budding heads with your musical career guide, ask yourself these questions:
- Have they crafted a detailed and thought out campaign for your most recent music?
- Are they booking venues that up-and-comers have played at and that A & R people might show up to?
- Are they negotiating well enough to get you a good deal without compromising your artistic integrity?
- Has your following on social media shown improvement?
- HAVE YOU SIGNED A CONTRACT? WHAT’S THE PERCENTAGE FOR THEIR INCOME FROM YOU?
There are so many more things to discuss when thinking of your manager. We aren’t promising you a Scooter Braun or Lou Perlman, but you may want to use them as a reference point when choosing who you want to manage your career. They are there to protect you from making uninformed decisions, as well as building and promoting your brand. Always think of your long term career goals and what you want to accomplish when choosing a manager, for they are your musical Yoda!
